Why you’ll love this healthy buffalo chicken dip
- Football season always makes me crave all things buffalo chicken, and this dip is a great addition to my regular buffalo recipes – like buffalo chicken wraps and crispy oven baked wings.
- Personally, I’m more of a chip-dipper, but I love that this dip pairs so well with chips and vegetables. I find myself reaching for those cooling-celery sticks to balance the heat of the spicy buffalo sauce.
- You don’t need to add cheese to this recipe at all. The base is made from a combination of hummus, mayo and coconut yogurt, but a little sprinkle of dairy free blue cheese wouldn’t hurt.
Ingredients & substitutions
- Hummus – Plain hummus is best because it doesn’t conflict with the flavor of the dip. You can use store-bought or homemade.
- Dairy free yogurt – I like So Delicious plain and unsweetened coconut yogurt best, but you can use a different brand, or even dairy free sour cream.
- Nutritional yeast – This adds a cheesy flavor to the dip, but could be left out if you aren’t able to find it.
- Cornstarch – Helps with thickening the dip as it cooks, but you can also substitute all-purpose flour if you don’t have cornstarch (just be sure to use double the amount with this substitute).
- Buffalo wing sauce – I use buffalo wing sauce for this recipe, usually Frank’s buffalo wing sauce (not the regular hot sauce). I’ve also used Sweet Baby Ray’s as well. Just be sure to check the label to make sure it suits your needs.
- Chicken – I normally use rotisserie chicken, but any cooked chicken will work. Canned chicken breast would be great if you want a nice shortcut.
Making changes to a recipe can result in recipe failure. Any substitutions listed below are simple changes that I believe will work in this recipe, but results are not guaranteed.
How to make this healthy buffalo chicken dip
Mix the dip. In a large mixing bowl, combine the mayo, yogurt, hummus and buffalo sauce. Then, mix in nutritional yeast, cornstarch, spices and chicken. Stir until evenly combined, breaking up the chicken as much as you can while stirring.
Bake the dip. Transfer the dip into a baking dish and bake at 350˚F for about 20 minutes, or until the dip has thickened and is bubbling around the edges.
Garnish and serve. Remove the dip from the oven and top with a drizzle of extra wing sauce and some thinly sliced green onion and/or chopped fresh parsley.
I like to serve my dip with a variety of dippers. Typically that’s tortilla chips, pita chips, celery and carrots sticks.
Everything you need to know about buffalo chicken dip
There are plenty of alternatives to chips that will work wonderfully buffalo chicken dip. You can try celery sticks, carrot sticks, or even cucumber slices for a refreshing crunch that mellow out the spiciness of the dip. If you’re looking for something heartier, consider toasted pita bread or tortilla strips. The veggies and pita chips are slightly more substantial and hold up well when scooping this hearty dip.
Cornstarch was added to this dip to compensate for the nature of the dairy free ingredients which are not always as quite as thick as their dairy counterparts. This dairy free buffalo dip will appear relatively thin prior to baking it, but don’t fret it will thicken as the cornstarch heat. Allow the dip to rest for about 5 minutes after removing it from the oven, this resting period allows it to thicken up nicely.
